Here’s why this is so significant to grasp: the primary place we establish our core beliefs about God as Father is our experience of our earthly father, the way “father” has been expressed in our story. I’m asking you to pause and take stock honestly. What comes to mind, emotionally and unedited, when you think of your full experience and observations of “father” in our culture? Look at the examples of many of the men you grew up around - coaches, teachers, fathers of friends, the men in your masculine heritage - in these specific places in your story. If we were to pause, let that soak in, and be honest, it might help us unearth a core assumption obscured below the surface of our masculine heart. If we were to be honest and dive into our own inner world (and that of most men), we would discover that the story of fatherlessness is not the exception but the norm. George MacDonald posed this question in his brilliant book Unspoken Sermons: “How have you learned the Father?” It is a wise father that knows his own child.Today’s Daily Reading is an excerpt from Morgan Snyder's book “Becoming a King” "The musician sings in The Two Gentlemen of Verona", Gilbert, 1865 O, that our fathers would applause our loves, / To seal our happiness with their consents! - Two Gentlemen of Verona, Act 1 Scene 3 A Midsummer Night's Dream, Act 1 Scene 1 To you your father should be as a god, / One that composed your beauties, yea, and one / To whom you are but as a form in wax, / By him imprinted and within his power / To leave the figure or disfigure it. My father's wit, and my mother's tongue, assist me! - Love's Labours Lost, Act 1 Scene 2 If by chance I talk a little wild, forgive me I had it from my father.
